Year 2

Children in Year Two participate in daily phonics which follows the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme. Children participate in daily guided reading sessions. Each classroom has a role play area, craft area, book corner and a range of resources for children to access a variety of activities.

We follow a topic based curriculum with children learning through the themes such as Holidays, Healthy Living, Special Places, ‘Move It’ (looking at forces and friction) and Light and Dark in the Autumn term.

In the Spring term we learn through comparing. We look at Victorian Times compared to the present in our topic ‘All in the Past’, explore different versions of Cinderella and compare London to our Local Environment in ‘Location, Location’. Growing Things, The Great Fire of London and a geographical study of our local area are our topics in the Summer term.

The children participate in a range of reading, writing and mathematical activities linked to these topics. Children have opportunities to write for a range of purposes including story writing, poetry, riddles, recounts and diary writing.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and the ‘Living Difference’ agreed Religious Education syllabus for Hampshire. Further details on our curriculum, topics and how parents/carers can support learning at home can be found in the half termly leaflets below.
