Fine Motor Skills and Handwriting
We use a whole school approach to improving letter formation and handwriting. The scheme that we use is called Kinetic Letters. It is based on ensuring the children have the strength in their bodies, arms, wrists, hands and fingers to prepare them for the skill of handwriting. They are encouraged to write in a lizard position laying on the floor in order to build core strength. They then use playdough, pegs, tweezers and threading to develop the strength in their hands before they learn the ‘pencil pick up song’ to help them to hold the pencil correctly. Each letter that the children learn to write is linked to a story for the children to remember the correct formation of the letter and how it sits on the line.
Please also refer to our Handwriting Policy below and further information about Kinetic Letters.
