What Do We Do?

Our Governing Body (working in conjunction with the Headteacher) has responsibility for the following:

  • The aims and policies of the school and how standards of education can be improved
  • Strategic decisions on how the school should be run
  • Compilation of the school improvement plan
  • Decisions on how to spend the school budget
  • Appointment of staff
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of performance management
  • Carrying out Head Teacher Performance Management review
  • Approval of teachers’ salaries
  • Acting as a link between the school and the local community
  • Drawing up an action plan after an OFSTED Inspection and monitoring the progress of the plan

As a governing body, we have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
    • Setting the vision, values, and objectives for the school
    • Agreeing the school improvement strategy with priorities and targets
    • Meeting statutory duties
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
    • Appointing the headteacher
    • Monitoring progress towards targets
    • Performance managing the headteacher
    • Engaging with stakeholders
    • Contributing to school self-evaluation
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
    • Setting the budget
    • Monitoring spending against the budget
    • Ensuring value for money is obtained
    • Ensuring risks to the organization are managed

We each have links to particular class groups/staff members and hold one or more strategic responsibilities (e.g Special Educational Needs, Health and Safety or Literacy) in addition to attending Full Governing Body Meetings.   We also make regular visits to the school to help ensure that improvements detailed in the School Improvement Plan are being made, and to monitor particular aspects within the school.   Governors also play an important role in some of the day-to-day school business such as helping in class, attending and supporting school events, or going on trips.
